Jesus calls us o’er the tumult of our life’s wild restless sea.
My sister and I learned this old hymn as little girls when we accompanied our mom and dad to Christian Endeavor conventions. It came to mind this summer when we worshipped with a friend while on vacation. The words remind us that we have been called, by name, to follow the One who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
What do you do when your name is called? Do you hear the call with your ears, with your feet or with your heart? When we hear with our ears, we file the words away for future reference or we ignore them or we pretend we don’t hear so we don’t have to add one more thing to an already crowded schedule. When we hear with our feet, we keep on moving in the direction we were heading with little thought about the words’ meaning for our lives and a hope that the call will go away. But when we hear with our hearts, something different happens. We hear our names called and we must respond.
In the coming months, please take time to pray about your passions and interests as a member of the Bloomfield Presbyterian Church on the Green. As Session explores new ministries for our congregation, there will be opportunities to say, “Yes! What can I do?” Be willing to speak up and share your hopes and dreams and how they can make a difference in the lives of those in our community. Be prepared to say “yes” when your passion comes face to face with opportunities for ministry. These opportunities may be as big and as far away as a work trip to the Gulf Coast or as simple and as close by as a telephone call to invite a friend to join you for worship on Sunday mornings. Faith and mission are not measured by size but by the heart’s commitment. Jesus calls each one of us by name. His voice is sweet and the command is for each one of us - “Follow me.”
I look forward to the journey of faith with you in the coming months. See you in church.
